Types of bones There are five types of bones: 1. Long bones e.g. femur, tibia, humerus 2. Short bones e.g. bones of the tarsus and carpus 3. Flat bones e.g. scapula 4. Irregular bones e.g. bones of the skull and hip bone. 5. Sesamoid bones e.g. patella Short Bones Short bones have approximately the same dimensions in all directions and thus include the carpal and tarsal bones of the hand and foot. They consist of a core of cancellous or spongy bone enclosed in a thin shell of compact bone. Flat Bones Flat bones consist of two stout layers of compact bone joined by a layer of spongy bone These are found in the head, trunk and shoulder girdle. Irregular Bones These comprise all those which do not fit into the classification above and they include the vertebrae, the hip bone and some cranial bones. Sesamoid Bones These are usually small and rounded and are found embedded in certain tendons, usually where the latter run in close proximity to another bone. Their main function is protective. The patella (knee cap) is a sesamoid bone. Others are found around joints in the head and foot.
