# The Frigid Zone The Frigid zone is the area between the Arctic circle and the North Pole or between the Antarctic circle and the South Pole. ## Climate The areas around the poles are sparsely populated due to the severe cold and lack of vegetation. During summer there is continuous daylight even at midnight. Similarly, in winter these regions have continuous darkness. Snow keeps falling and the soil remains frozen hard. The continent of Antarctica is the coldest place in the world and it lies in the southern Frigid Zone. It is known as the frozen continent. ## Plant Life The soil is permanently frozen except in the summer season. Thus hardly any crops or plants grow here and only the very hardy ones survive. When snow thaws in the summer some shrubs such as mosses, lichens and grass grow. A few flower bearing plants and berry bearing shrubs such as blueberries, cranberries and wild currants are seen. The image shows the aurora borealis in the northern hemisphere.
