INDTCH 9 (Shop Personnel Management, Supervision, and Apprenticeship Training) Topic 5 Apprenticeship Training Program At the end of the topic, students should be able to: 1. define Apprenticeship Training; 2. discuss the benefits of apprenticeship training; and 3. identify the limitations of apprenticeship training. Apprenticeship Training  Apprenticeship training is a skill enhancement program that comprises both theoretical instruction and practical on-the-job training to help participants develop proficiency and grow as professionals (Indeed Editorial Team, 2023).  Apprenticeship is a kind of training system where one is trained to learn a skill or trade from an expert in a designated period (Alp Consulting, 2023). Benefits of Apprenticeship Training  Benefits of Apprenticeship for Businesses  Address Skill Scarcity By training apprentices, corporates can have a steady supply of skilled people who meet their specific needs. They can build a competent, adaptable, and agile workforce that keeps up with the dynamic business environment. Consequently, it helps reduce the efforts they have to make in finding new talent.  Augment Organizational Productivity Apprenticeships can help an organization increase productivity. As an apprentice, the person can assist seniors, helping them expedite their tasks. Later, when wholly trained for the company’s requirements, the same person can perform tasks more efficiently and effectively, thus augmenting organizational productivity.  Reduce Hiring Costs Considering talent shortages and the need to find the best fit, hiring has become complex, time- consuming, and expensive. However, engaging apprentices and, further, absorbing performant talent in the ecosystem can help companies save time and up to 50% of costs incurred in new hiring.  Increase Employee Retention Hiring apprentices and training them to enhance their capabilities signifies a company’s commitment to its workforce. People are more likely to remain motivated and loyal while working for such companies. Apprentices perform even better when they know that the company might absorb and hire them on its payroll after completion of the apprenticeship program.  Benefits of Apprenticeship for Students  Hands-on Learning Experience Apprenticeships provide a practical, on-the-job training experience, imparting the skills needed for that job and sector. The work experience equips apprentices with practical skills essential for their professional growth.  Acquisition of Industry-Specific Skills Individuals undertaking apprenticeships acquire industry-specific skills and knowledge, ensuring a solid foundation for their chosen career path. Apprenticeships also offer a platform for developing and enhancing skills, contributing to overall career development and success.  Enhanced Career Prospects Completing an apprenticeship enhances career prospects, offering a clear pathway for advancement and long-term success within the chosen industry. Apprenticeships open up opportunities for career progression as employees gain a recognized qualification and demonstrate their capabilities, paving the way for promotions and increased responsibilities within the organization.  Exposure to Real-World Challenges and Scenarios Apprentices gain exposure to real-world situations, industry challenges and scenarios, preparing them to apply their skills and knowledge effectively in professional settings.  Diverse Career Pathways Completing an apprenticeship opens doors to diverse career paths, offering a secure foundation for future professional growth. They allow individuals to pursue different industries and roles based on their interests and aspirations.  Increased Employability Skills Graduates of apprenticeship programs often possess enhanced employability skills, making them more desirable in the job market.  Professional Development Opportunities Apprenticeships provide a platform for individuals to upskill, acquire new talents, and enhance their career prospects within their chosen fields. Existing employees can benefit from apprenticeship programs by accessing professional development opportunities to upskill and improve their capabilities.  Lifelong Learning Culture Through apprenticeships, individuals develop a lifelong learning mindset and skills. As a result, they can continuously improve and stay relevant in their chosen field.  Social and Community Impact Apprenticeships have a social and community impact by producing skilled professionals who positively contribute to society and the economy. Apprenticeships also improve social mobility, giving people from all backgrounds better life chances. Limitations of Apprenticeship Training o Experts have difficulty expressing their expertise, leaving learners to guess or approximate what is necessary to become experts. o Experts often rely solely on simulation, hoping that learners will pick up knowledge and skills by observing the expert in action, and don't include the other stages that contribute to the success of an apprenticeship model. o Experts can only manage a limited number of learners due to their busy work schedules. o There are large numbers of experienced tradespeople in the workforce without full accreditation, limiting their career development and slowing job growth in areas where there are shortages of fully qualified skilled workers. o Apprenticeships in rapidly changing workplaces may hinder adaptation due to traditional values and norms passed down by the masters that may no longer apply to current conditions.
