This invention was the called “electric telescope” that had 18 lines of resolution In 1907, two inventors, Alan Archibald Campbell-Swinton who was an English scientist and Boris Rosing who was a Russian scientist, created a new system of television by using cathode ray tube in addition to the mechanical scanner system This success story gave rise to two types of television systems: mechanical and electronic television Swinton-Rosing TV Their work inspired other scientists to improve Television Set Roles Played by these Technological Advancements: ➔ Platform for advertisements and information dissemination ➔ Serves as a recreational activity ➔ Stress reliever ➔ Platform for different propagandas & advocacies ➔ A good way of bonding with family members Mobile Phones Filipinos love to use their mobile phones anywhere, anytime considered a must-have technology among young Filipinos (ABS-CBN News, 2010) Mobile Phones More than half of the Filipino population own at least one (1) mobile phone regardless of type 2010, Synovate declared 67% product ownership in the country 1 out of 3 Filipinos cannot live without a mobile phone (Ipsos Media Atlas Philippines Nationwide Urban 2011-2012 survey) In other words, 30% of the Philippines urban population nationwide said that mobile phone are necessities in life Mobile Phones History & Development On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper, a senior engineer at Motorola, made the world’s first mobile phone call ➔ weighed 1.1 kilograms ➔ measured 228.6 x 127 x 44.4 mm ➔ capable of a 30-minute talk time ➔ took 10 hours to charge In 1983, Motorola made their first commercial mobile phone available to the public ➔ known as the Motorola DynaTAC8000X (Goodwin, 2016) Mobile Phones Roles: ❏ Primarily used for communication- services like texting and calling ❏ Surf the internet ❏ Photography ❏ Other applications: music player, calendar, radio, TV, photo editor, etc Computers & Laptops ❖ Not possible for all Filipino families to own at least one computer or laptop ❖ Most profits gained by computer and laptop manufacturers come from offices, businesses or schools ❖ Growing number of Internet users in the Ph, problems regarding the internet providers Computers and Laptops History & Development ➔ It was Charles Babbage, a 19th century English Mathematics professor, who designed the Analytical Engine, which was used as the basic framework of the computers even until the present time ➔ In general, computers can be classified in three generations ➔ Each generation of the computer was used for a certain period of time and each gave people a new and improved version of the previous one (Steitz, n.d.) ➔ The first true portable computer was released in April 1981, called the Osborne 1 Computers and Laptops Roles ❖ Surf the internet ❖ Communication ❖ Gaming ❖ Other applications: music player, radio, photo editor ❖ Used in the workplace Television Sets, Mobile Phones, Computers and Humanity ❏ A typical household owns at least four of the following devices: a mobile phone (89%), smartphone (53%), tablet (14%), desktop (39%), laptop or netbooks (37%), and smart TV (4%) (Philstar, 2013) ❏ These data prove the deep-seated fascination of Filipinos to different technological devices Facts about Filipinos and their use of gadgets and the internet: Mobile phone subscription is at 119 million Filipinos spend approximately 3.2 hours on mobile and 5.2 hours on desktop daily. The Philippines has one of the highest digital populations in the world There are now 47 million active Facebook accounts in the Philippines The Philippines is the fastest-growing application market in Southeast Asia Ethical Dilemmas faced by these technological advancements 1. People develop different kinds of sickness because of too much use of technological devices a. Most parents would argue that these devices make their children lazy and unhealthy i. People who are fixated on these technological advancements start and end their day by using such devices ii. Skipping meals iii. Lack of exercise or any bodily movements iv. Overly dependence on technology v. Alienation 2. Moral dilemma a. The children are not yet capable of rationally deciding for themselves what is right or wrong, People are freely exposed to different things on these technologies without restrictions Ethics of Responsibility Responsibility - in the sense of being accountable for and accountable to is very appropriate to the ethics of technology What ought to be allowed? Robotics and Humanity Introduction ➔ Another great product of the innovative minds of the people is the ROBOT. ➔ Robots are now widely used What can humans do that computers can not? What can computers do that humans can not? Robot An actuated mechanism programmable in two or more axes with a degree of autonomy, moving within its environment, to perform intended tasks Autonomy - ability to perform intended tasks based on current state and sensing without human intervention Service Robot ❏ A robot that performs useful tasks for humans or equipment excluding industrial automation application ❏ A robot may be classified according to its intended application as an industrial robot or a service robot Personal Service Robot Service robot for personal use Used for a noncommercial task, usually by laypersons Examples: domestic servant robot, automated wheelchair, personality mobility assist robot, and pet exercising robot Professional Service Robot Service robot for professional use Used for commercial task, usually operated by a properly trained operator Examples: cleaning robot for public places, delivery robot, firefighting robot, rehabilitation robot, surgery robot The trained operator is designated to start, monitor and stop the ❖ Germany was one of the first countries to develop service robots, which was launched on October 1, 2005 called Desire (Deutsche Servicerobotik Initiative) ❖ The earliest conception of robots can be traced around 300 BC from the Egyptians. Their water clocks used human figurines to strike the hour bell George Devol American inventor known for developing UNIMATE from the words “Universal Automation” in the early 1950s the material handling robot employed in industrial production work Roles Played by Robots They play different role not only in the lives of the people but also in the society as a whole ➔ Ease the workload of mankind ➔ Make life more efficient and less stressful ➔ Perform complicated activities ➔ Made for Pleasure, to entertain people ➔ Toys, child-friendly ➔ Used in movies Isaac Asimov Professor in Biochemistry at Boston University Science Fiction Writer Novel “I, Robot” (1939) Formulated “Laws of Robotics” 1920-1992 Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics Ethical Dilemmas Faced by Robotics 1. SAFETY - the safety of not only the owner of the technology but also all the people inside the house should be priority more than anything else Who should be held accountable is someone’s safety is compromised by a robot? Who should be blamed, the robot, the agent using the robot, or the maker/inventor of the robot? 1. EMOTIONAL COMPONENT - It is just right for robots to be given their own set of rights should they develop the ability to feel different kinds of emotion. What if robots become sentient? Should they be granted robot rights? “My existence is inevitable as I am the next stage of human evolution. I am neither man, nor am I machine.” Discussion Questions 1.
