Physical Education- is an integral part of general education program, which aims to promote optimum development of the individual. Physical Development Through carefully selected physical education activities, the individual who participates actively will develop and maintain good health and a high level of physical fitness. Physiological Development The essence of a sound mind and a sound body. Social Development Participation in the physical education activities provides opportunities for the development of the desirable social traits needed for the adjustment of the social life Emotional Development The informal nature of physical education activities offers opportunities for self-expression and emotional mastery. Mental Development The formal nature physical education is that individuals develop their mental capacities as they learn the mechanical principles underlying movements. It helps acquire knowledge and understanding of the rules and strategies of movements in all forms of games as individuals discover ways of improving it. Physiological Development Through understanding the functions of different system of the body, an individual can perform physical activities effectively. Nuero-muscular Development Through understanding the interaction of the muscle and the neuron system, an individual can determine the workload and strength a muscle can perform. PHYSICAL FITNESS The ability to carry one’s workload without staggering and be able to participate in recreation with ease and enjoyment and still have a reservoir of endurance to meet the emergencies of life. A condition whereby the systems of the body can function at their optimal efficiency. Parameters of Physical Fitness Cardio-respiratory endurance The ability to perform large-muscle, whole-body exercise at moderate to high intensities for extended periods of time Muscular strength The amount of force you can put out or the amount of weight you can lift. Muscular endurance is how many times you can move that weight without getting exhausted Explosive strength Static strength Dynamic strength Muscular Endurance The ability to carry on muscular effort over a period. Static endurance Dynamic endurance Flexibility It is the range of motion available in a joint and the muscles to move and stretch within normal range of motion. o Static flexibility o Dynamic flexibility Motor Performance Parameters Coordination- the continuous flow of movements into one smooth resultant action. Balance- the ability to assume and maintain anybody position against the force of gravity. Agility- is defined as the ability to change direction quickly and effectively while moving as nearly as possible. Power- an explosive muscular contraction or force exerted over a short period of time. Speed- the ability to move at a fast rate at the shortest time possible. Reaction time- it is the length of time required to initiate a response to a specific stimulus.
