## Kingdom Protista - **Endosymbiosis** is a theory that explains the evolution of Eukaryotic cells and how they evolved by a symbiotic relationship between two or more Prokaryotic cells - The word Proto means first, they have a long history and have evolved a lot - They are like the biological junk drawer, meaning the bottom of the barrel almost - **Animals like Protist:** Protozoans, they hunt and gather microbes and food - **Heterotrophic** - Classified into four general groups by movement types - They digest their food and produce nitrogen when they do - **Plant-like Protist:** They make their own food using Chloroplast, they are **Autotrophic** - Can also ingest food if there is no sunlight - Use flagella or cilia to move around - Have noticeable organelles such as eyespot or vacuole - **Fungus-like Protist:** They are Heterotrophic, living mainly on decaying matter in the habitat. - To move they use Cilia, flagella, and Cytoplasmic streaming - Which is basically stretching the cytoplasm in the direction of choice. - **Reproduction:** Binary fission, copy nucleus and then there are two identical daughter cells. Multiple fission; copies hercules and then splits into many identical cells. Conjugation, join with partner and genetically transfer material. ## Protist in Ecosystems: - They are most of the time decomposers in ecosystems, and they are the lowest form of food in the food chain (aquatic). They have symbiotic relationships, for example the coral and they do photosynthesis which releases the oxygen into the atmosphere ## Pathogenic Protist: - Can cause disease in plants and animals. Examples include: - **Trypanosomes** - infects human blood, causing sleeping sickness, passed from mosquitoes to humans - **Plasmodium** - causes malaria ## Kingdom Fungi Notes: - They are **Heterotrophic** which means they hunt and gather their foods. - Fungi decompose and grow on their food, **Athletes Foot** is a fungi that feeds on you.
