Owl: I am a lady trapped in a bird's body. The sound of silence that surrounds me in this dark forest makes me melancholic. My speech can never be understood by human beings. I was born aprincess. My name is Lusa. An evil SPell edapoed me from my father's palace tersorcerer and cursed me, for I refused to marry him. And now, I must remain a bird, until another man asks me to wed him. (She weeps hysterically. Hearing this, the caliph and the vizier get extremely furious.) Vizier Stork: Do you know where we can find this evil sorcerer? 8 is a ruin near the torest, which normal people do not visit. The sorcerer visits o w l : Yes, t h e r e thisplace with his followers every fortnight. But why do you ask? CaliphStork: We too are the victims of a magic spell. The caliph's brother, Umar, the usurper, enters with his assistants.) Cahdur: I bow down before my glorious Lord. Why did you want to meet me in such a hurry? Umar: People are longing for their old ruler. Afew ministers have started speakingup against me. You will have to cast another spell to help me control them. Cahdur: Fear not. my Lord. Your brother will never return, as he would be busy catching fishes in some pond (laughs hysterically). he and his vizier will roam around as storks orever. Unless they recite the magic words cOrrectly, they won't be able to return to their human forms. Ans - i) A peddler visited the caliph and vizier. ii) The peddler, Cahdur, gave the Caliph an illegible piece of paper anda snuftboX. iii)On the piece of paper was an enchanted spell. The Caliph and the vizier recited the spell and sniffed the snuff, which transformed them into storks. iv) On the storks' return after three days, they found their kingdom usurped by Umar, the Caliph's brother. v)Unable to return to their original human shape, the storks flew away to a jungle. vi) In the jungle, they met an owl. vii) The owl was actually a princess named Lusa, who was turned into an owl by an evil sorcerer when she refused to marry him. vii)They read out the enchanted words written on the bark of a tree and transformed back into humans. ix) With the owl's help, the Caliph and the vizier storks got hold of the evil sorcerer, Cahdur and killed him x) The Caliph then defeated his brother, Umar and took back his kingdom. xi) Finally, the Caliph married Princess Lusa and lived happily ever after. *HOME ASSIGNMENTS. Ans -In the play The Caliph Stork- Act 1,Cahdur fools the Caliph easily as a simple peddler. Hisreal identity gets revealed only in The Caliph Stork- Act I. His behaviour towards Princess Lusa contfirms the wickedness of his character. We see the character of Cahdur as a shrewd cunning but competent sorcerer in The Caliph Stork- Act II. 2. Describe the encounter of the storks with the owl. Ans - After struggling for a month, the storks reached a dense jungle, where they met an owl. Itwas actually an enchanted princes, cursed by an evil sorcerer. Hearing this revelation, the Caliph too revealed their true identities. Then, with the help of the owl, they defeated the evil sorcerer, Cahdur the Caliph's brother, Umar and regained their kingdom.
