ANALOG TO DIGITAL CONVERSION ANALOG SIGNALS An analog signal is a voltage, current, or physical quantity that continuously and infinitely varies in accordance with some time-varying parameter. For example, radio waves, television waves, or sound waves are all examples of analog signals. DIGITAL SIGNALS Unlike analog signals, digital signals are not continuous, but signals are discrete in value and time. These signals are represented by binary numbers and consist of different voltage values. Difference between Analog and Digital Signals Analog-to-Digital Conversion Analog-to-Digital Conversion (ADC) is the process of converting continuous analog signals into discrete digital numbers. This is crucial for digital systems (like computers and digital signal processors) to handle real-world signals which are naturally analog (e.g., sound, temperature). ADC PROCESS - Sampling - Quantization - Encoding Sampling The ADC samples the continuous analog signal at regular intervals. This process captures snapshots of the signal’s amplitude at specific points in time. Quantization The sampled values are then q u a n ti ze d , m e a n i n g t h e y a r e mapped to a finite set of discrete levels. Each level corresponds to a specific digital value. Encoding The quantized values are converted into binary code (0s and 1s) that digital systems can process. This binary representation is what allows the digital system to interpret the analog signal. Why is ADC Important? 1. Compatibility with Digital Systems 2. Precision and Accuracy 3. Enhanced Data Handling 4. Improved Signal Quality 5. Versatility and Flexibility 6. Real-World Applications Seatwork Write a reaction paper regarding the video about Analog to Digital Conversion.
