## Dispersion of Light Through Prism ### Activity 16.9 To create a rainbow using a prism you will need: * A prism * A white sheet * A beam of light from a window source **Procedure:** 1. Take a prism and place it in such a way that it receives a narrow beam of light from a small opening in the window. 2. Place a plane white sheet on the other side of the prism. 3. What do you observe? **Conclusion:** The splitting of sunlight into seven colours can be seen easily though the phenomenon of dispersion. ### Dispersion of Light Through Prism Have you seen a rainbow in the sky after rainfall? Have you ever considered how this beautifully arranged band of colours is formed in the sky? It is a natural evidence of the presence of many colours in white light. A rainbow is an example for dispersion. After rain, sunlight passes through water droplets present in the atmosphere. The light rays change direction when they enter the water droplets, resulting in two processes: reflection and refraction - forming a bow of various colours we see as the rainbow. Look at the figure 16.14 to see how it is formed.
