### Pancake Collapses Pancake collapses are so named because the floors of the structure fall in layers, resembling a stack of pancakes (fig. 22-34). Although this may appear to present an unstable situation, that is not the case, since the floors are very often resting directly on the floor below it. The lowest level must be carefully examined to see how the entire pile is supported, to determine whether the load is being safely transferred to ground, or whether further collapse into cellars is possible. Numerous rescues have been made from pancake collapses in Class 3 and Class 5 buildings. Survival depends on the presence of strong objects nearby to
