## Types of Mirrors and the Properties of Images Formed ### Uses of spherical mirrors #### 1. Convex mirrors - A convex mirror has a reflective surface that bulges out towards the light source. - Its bulging out surface reflects light outwards and are not used to focus light. - A convex mirror gives us a wider range of view. Some of its important uses are as given below: - They are used in the vehicles for getting the rear view of the objects. - They are used in shopping complexes, petrol pumps etc. for surveillance. #### 2. Concave mirrors - A concave mirror, or converging mirror, has a reflecting surface that is recessed inward away from the light source. - Concave mirrors reflect light inward to one focal point. So, they are used to focus light. - Concave mirrors are used by dentists to have a complete look of the teeth. - They are used as reflectors in the headlights of vehicles. - They are used in astronomical telescope for getting magnified images of planets, moons and stars and other galaxies. - In the making of solar cooker concave mirrors are used as concentrators. - They are used as shaving mirrors. - A concave mirror in a solar cooker is able to reflect and concentrate solar energy from over a wide area into a small area. It is used to focus light in cooking food. ### Lenses - A lens reflects light from a material surface for concentrating light. - Lenses are used in cameras, telescopes etc. - Convex lenses converge the edges of light rays and the concave lens diverges them. - The lens which converges light rays is convex and the one that diverges light rays is concave.
