Runaway slaves were eventually caught and punished very severely. Slavery was eventually abolished in 1834. ## Slave legacy at the Cape: - Slavery was in the Cape for 180 years. - Many slaves came from the east. - During this period the slaves made an enormous cultural contribution to the Cape and the area around it. - Many of the skills that the slaves brought with them can be seen in the Cape-Dutch buildings and architecture of the time. - Slaves also brought their own music, language and design. - Cape Malay musical tradition is continued by the Cape Minstrel Carnival held on 2 January every year. ## Cape Malay food: - Cape Malay food has a particular style and flavor such as bobotie, bredie, samosas which have all become part of South African culture and tradition. ## Religion of Islam: - The religion of Islam was also brought to the Cape by slaves and by political leaders who were exiled to the Cape by the Dutch. - This is why there is a large group of South African Muslims are still found in the Western Cape.
