Laboratory Safety & Biomedical Waste Dr. Abdelraheem Ahmad Lab Safety Laboratory safety rules are a major aspect of every lab. Every person in any laboratory must follow specific safety rules and procedures. Laboratory safety refers to the set of practices, procedures, and guidelines designed to ensure the well-being of individuals working in a laboratory environment, as well as samples. Lab Safety Rules Wear Protective Clothing Always Lab coats and Gloves (PPE) Personal Protective Equipment Closed Shoes Full pants (no shorts/skirts) Some labs require masks and safety goggles No Jewelry Lab Safety Rules Long hair must be tied back or covered to minimize fire hazard or contamination of experiments Lab Safety Rules Avoid touching objects (phones, tablets, door handles) while wearing gloves Never place objects (like pencils) in your mouth Lab Safety Rules Caution must be taken when using gas burners. Be sure gas burners are turned off when finished Lab Safety Rules NEVER… NEVER… NEVER… eat or drink in lab (including gum) Lab Safety Rules Clean your bench before you leave Lab Safety Rules Wash your hands after each lab, and before you leave the lb Lab Safety Rules Electrical safety Unplug electrical equipment after use. Keep all electrical cords and wires away from water Lab Safety Rules Chemical safety Never touch, taste or smell a chemical unless instructed to do so Never mix chemicals unless instructed to do so Keep lids on chemical containers when not in use ALWAYS READ LABELS Never work with a chemical you do not know Lab Safety Rules Anything you do not need, must stay outside the labs Notebooks Bags Lab Safety Rules Joking is extremely prohibited. Lab is a serious place. Get in, do the job, leave!!! It is not a place to laugh or make relationships. Lab Safety Rules Dispose of waste products according to instructions Lab Safety Equipment Safety shower Eye wash Fire extinguisher Lab Safety Symbols Lab Safety Symbols What happens to metals when exposed to a corrosive chemical Safety Data Sheet (SDS) or Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) Multi-page chemical fact sheet with specific information about each hazardous material (chemical) made by the manufacturer and is intended to provide comprehensive information about the chemical or compound. You should be familiar with possible harmful effects of any chemical you work with, read the SDS!! Every lab should have a folder with SDS for all chemicals in it If you cannot find it in lab, look it up on the internet!! Example: https://chemicalsafety.com/sds-search/ Or you can google the SDS NFPA Hazard Diamond NFPA: National Fire Protection Association Lab Waste Handling
