## 14.2 Structural Representation of Organic Molecules **Try this** - Draw the structural formula of ethane - Draw electron-dot structure of propane In the previous standards, you learnt how to write structural formulae and electron dot structure of hydrocarbons. Structural formula of a molecule shows all the constituent atoms resulting in a condensed form. For example, the condensed form of ethane is CH₃CH₂. ## 14.2.2 Bond lines In this representation, we use symbols of carbon and hydrogen atoms instead of writing them out. The lines represent single bonds and are drawn between the terminals of the atoms. The number of hydrogen atoms bonded to a carbon atom is indicated by a line representation. For example: the hydrogen bonded to the heteroatom in the ethane molecule is represented as -OH.
