01‐01 Introduction to Hardware 2020/02/19 Section Goal 01‐01 Introduction to Hardware To provide an understanding of digital devices and how they fit into the tasks we humans use them for 1. What is Hardware? 2. Digital vs Analogue 3. Binary System 4. Major computer functions 5. WRFV101/10X, BSW1121 & WRSC111 Topics 6. WRFV102/1X0 & BSW1122 Topics 01‐01 Introduction to Hardware 2 of 9 DEPRTMENT F CMPUTING SCIENCES DEPRTMENT F CMPUTING SCIENCES Introduction to Hardware Digital vs Analogue Hardware refers to the physical part of any device – the Analogue data is used (transmitted / parts you can touch – e.g.: stored) as a continuous wave of Monitor varying amplitude (wave length); Printer smooth and continuous – e.g. sound Cards inside the System box transmitted over a landline telephone Software refers to the instructions that use the hardware in order to achieve a particular task – e.g.: Windows 10 Digital data is used as a finite set of Microsoft Word numbers; stepping, square and iLearn Moodle discrete – e.g. the way data is used by computers, using the Binary The two must work together for users to achieve tasks System 01‐01 Introduction to Hardware 3 of 9 01‐01 Introduction to Hardware 4 of 9 DEPRTMENT F CMPUTING SCIENCES DEPRTMENT F CMPUTING SCIENCES Binary System Bits and Bytes A Personal Computer (PC) is a digital device. Digital Bit because all information is represented and A Bit (Binary Digit) is the smallest unit of storage manipulated as numbers. A Bit is either a 0 or a 1 All software instructions and all data – e.g. the Byte Microsoft Word programme and any documents 8 Bits (0’s & 1’s) in a particular order, together makes up 1 created using Microsoft Word – are stored using a byte set of 8 0’s and 1’s for each character (note that a 1 byte can store one character, e.g. ‘A’, ‘a’, ‘ ’, or ‘$’ – e.g. space is also deemed a character!). A = 10000001 & a = 11000001 Because only 2 numbers are used, it is called the All hardware that deals with instructions and / or data is Binary System ‐ the 0’s and 1’s in binary represent usually referred to in terms of its size, measured in Bytes – e.g. a memory‐stick (USB Flash Drive) may come in OFF and ON respectively. different sizes from, e.g. 1GB to 100 GB, etc. 01‐01 Introduction to Hardware 5 of 9 01‐01 Introduction to Hardware 6 of 9 DEPRTMENT F CMPUTING SCIENCES DEPRTMENT F CMPUTING SCIENCES 1 01‐01 Introduction to Hardware 2020/02/19 Size Measurements The 4 Major Functions of a Computer A Kilobyte (KB), is ±1 thousand Bytes (1024 B) Input: Gathers data, allows entering ⁼ ±1 page of plain text data A Megabyte (MB ), is ±1 million Bytes (1024 KB) ⁼ ±4 books Process: Manipulates, calculates, or A Gigabyte (GB ), is ±1 billion Bytes (1024 MB) organizes data ⁼ ±4 500 books Output: Displays data and A Terabyte (TB), is ±1 trillion Bytes (1024 GB) information ⁼ ±4.6 million books A Petabyte (PB), is ±1 million GB (1024 TB) Storage: Saves data and ⁼ ±4.7 billion books information 01‐01 Introduction to Hardware 7 of 9 01‐01 Introduction to Hardware 8 of 9 DEPRTMENT F CMPUTING SCIENCES DEPRTMENT F CMPUTING SCIENCES Example Questions for Assessments Wrap‐up 1.
