The DIY method involves building, modifying, or repairing things without the direct aid of professionals. It emerged in the early 1900s in the domain of home improvement and maintenance activities, but has since taken on a broader meaning that covers a wide range of skill sets. DIY can be triggered by various motivations, including economic benefits, lack of product availability, lack of product quality, the need for customization, craftsmanship, empowerment, community seeking, and uniqueness. DIY has grown to become a social concept with people sharing ideas, designs, techniques, methods, and finished projects with one another either online or in person. DIY can be seen as a cultural reaction in modern technological society to increasing academic specialization and economic specialization which brings people into contact with only a tiny focus area within the larger context, positioning DIY as a venue for holistic engagement. DIY ethic is the ethic of self-sufficiency through completing tasks without the aid of a paid expert. The DIY movement is a re-introduction of the old pattern of personal involvement and use of skills in the upkeep of a house or apartment, making clothes, maintenance of cars, computers, websites, or any material aspect of living. DIY has also emerged within the fashion, art, and design community. The punk movement of the 1970s brought forward DIY as a subculture, and DIY has been used to describe music, film, and independent filmmaking characterized by low budgets, skeleton crews, and simple props using whatever is available. Resolver is a means of adaptation during the Cuban Special Period times of economic crisis, while jugaad is a non-conventional, frugal innovation, often termed a "hack" in India. Rasquache is the English form of the Spanish term rascuache, originally with a negative connotation in Mexico.
