Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
- PMS is common in women and girls, with symptoms occurring in the days leading up to their periods.
- Symptoms include physical and emotional discomfort.
- Examples of symptoms: tiredness, backaches, sore breasts, headaches, constipation, diarrhea, food cravings, depression, irritability, trouble concentrating.
- PMS symptoms are usually at their worst during the 7 days before the start of the period.
- Symptoms disappear after the period starts.
The Monthly Cycle
- The average monthly cycle for an adult woman is 28 days, but can vary from 23 to 35 days.
- The cycle includes ovulation.
Fertilization of an Egg
- Fertilization occurs if a female and male have sex within a few days of the female's ovulation.
- Millions of sperm are released during ejaculation.
- Only one sperm is needed to fertilize the egg.
- The fertilized egg travels to the uterus.
Blastocyst Development
- 5-6 days after fertilization, the fertilized egg is now a blastocyst.
