Freedmen's Town
- After the official emancipation of Texas slaves in 1865, many migrated to Houston.
- They formed a community southwest of Downtown.
- This area became Freedmen's Town and an African American cultural center.
- By 1930, it housed one-third of Houston's 36,000 Black residents.
- Freedmen's Town is now a Nationally Registered Historic Landmark.
- The Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, the first African American Baptist Church in Houston, was founded in 1866 by nine formerly enslaved people.
- Bethel Park is a green space from the remnants of Reverend Jack Yates' Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.
- The Rutherford B.H. Yates Museum preserves historic homes and community institutions in Freedmen's Town.
Emancipation Park
- Emancipation Park is in Houston's Third Ward.
- The park's land was acquired in 1872 when former slaves raised $1,000 to purchase the 10-acre parcel.
- The land was purchased to host Juneteenth celebrations.
- African American architect Phil Freelon designed the current park.
- Freelon is also known for his work on the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C.
Project Row Houses
- Project Row Houses is an art and cultural community center.
- It consists of 22 renovated shotgun-style homes on the 2500 Holman site.
- Ten of the twenty-two row houses are dedicated to art, photography and literary projects, installed on a rotating six-month basis.
- Each commissioned artist transforms a house to reflect on the history/cultural issues in the African-American community.
- Project Row Houses preserved the Eldorado Ballroom, a community entertainment venue for black social clubs.
- The Eldorado hosted blues, jazz, and R&B musicians like B.B. King, Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown and Ray Charles.
- Houston musicians Sam “Lightening” Hopkins and Johnny “Guitar” Watson honed their skills at the Eldorado.
