• History is the knowledge and study of the past
• History is the story of the past and a form of collective memory
• History is a narration of events that have happened among mankind, including an account of the rise and fall of nations and other great changes that have affected the political and social condition of the human race, according to John Jacob Anderson
• History tells the story of who we are and where we come from
• History can potentially reveal where we are headed

Kasaysayan

• Kasaysayan means:
  • Salaysay (Narrative)
  • Saysay (Meaning)
• It is a narrative about past events with meaning to a certain group of people at a given time and place
• It can be written, visual, oral, or a combination of all three

Why Study History?

• Studying history enhances our grasp of culture, social dynamics, and geopolitical complexities
• Past events influence the present and help guide us in making informed decisions
• It allows us to learn about ourselves and how we came to be
• It allows us to develop the ability to avoid mistakes and create better paths for our societies

• This allows us to understand how society worked in the past and how it came to be as it is now

• Historiography is the writing of history, especially the writing of history based on the critical examination of sources, the selection of particular details from the authentic materials in those sources, and the synthesis of those details into a narrative that stands the test of critical examination
• Historiography is the study of how history is written and how our historical understanding changes over time
• Historiography considers the approaches used by historians to understand how and why their theories and interpretations differ
