Study Notes
Female Reproductive System
- The fallopian tubes are narrow passageways connecting the ovaries to the uterus
- Each tube has a fringed area surrounding the ovary, that helps move the egg
- The ovaries contain hundreds of thousands of eggs
- At puberty, the pituitary gland releases hormones stimulating the ovaries
- Sex hormones, including estrogen and progesterone, develop a girl into a woman
- Toward the end of puberty, an egg is released from an ovary (ovulation)
- The egg travels through the fallopian tube
- If the egg is not fertilized, the lining of the uterus sheds (menstruation)
- Spermatozoa live for approximately 5 days within the female reproductive system
- A fertilized egg (zygote) implants into the uterine lining within 6-12 days
How the System Works
- The female reproductive system is responsible for producing eggs, enabling sexual intercourse, protecting and nourishing a fertilized egg until fully developed, and giving birth
- Sexual reproduction needs gonads (ovaries)
- Both sexes have gonads
- The female gonads are the ovaries
- The male gonads are the testicles
