Study Notes
Female Reproductive System
- The vulva is the external part of the female reproductive system, meaning "covering"
- The vulva covers the openings to the vagina and other reproductive organs within the body
- The vulva is located between the legs
- Two pairs of skin flaps called labia surround the vaginal opening
- The clitoris is a small sensory organ located where the labia folds meet
- The urethra and vagina openings are located between the labia
- Pubic hair covers the outer labia after sexual maturity
Vagina
- The vagina is a muscular, hollow tube extending from the vaginal opening to the cervix
- The vagina can expand and contract, accommodating objects as small as a tampon and as large as a baby
- The vagina's muscular walls are lined with mucous membranes to protect and keep it moist
- The vagina has three main functions:
- Site where intercourse occurs
- Pathway for childbirth
- Passage for menstrual flow
Cervix
- The cervix connects the vagina to the uterus
- The cervix is shaped like a "neck": narrow opening
- The cervix is strong and thick-walled
- The cervix's opening is small, preventing tampons from getting lost inside
- The cervix expands during childbirth to allow for the birth of a baby
Uterus
- The uterus is shaped like an upside-down pear
- The uterus has thick walls containing strong muscles
- These muscles expand during pregnancy and contract to help push out the baby during labor
- The non-pregnant uterus is approximately 3 inches (7.5 centimeters) long and 2 inches (5 centimeters) wide
Ovaries and Fallopian Tubes
- The ovaries and fallopian tubes are located in the upper corners of the uterus (one on each side)
- These are oval-shaped organs that produce, store, and release eggs
- The ovaries are connected to the fallopian tubes, releasing eggs into the fallopian tube, which connects to the uterus
