Eating Disorders Overview
- Eating disorders are clinically significant disturbances that cause distress or impairment.
- These disorders don't meet the full criteria for anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), or binge eating disorder (BED).
Anorexia Nervosa (AN)
- Restriction of energy intake relative to requirements leads to significantly low body weight.
- There is an intense fear of gaining weight or persistent behavior that interferes with weight gain.
- Body image is disturbed as one's body weight or shape is experienced, with undue influence on self-evaluation, or lack of recognition of seriousness of low body weight.
- Binge eating may occur in binge-eating/purging type AN.
- Compensatory behaviors include vomiting, laxatives, fasting, or excessive exercise.
- There is a persistent restriction and/or behaviors with no specific frequency stated, but the duration is ongoing.
- BMI is often less than 18.5, significantly low body weight is key.
- Subtypes include restricting type and binge-eating/purging type.
Bulimia Nervosa (BN)
- Bulimia Nervosa involves recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by inappropriate compensatory behaviors.
- Self-evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and weight.
- Objectively large amount of food in a discrete period with a sense of lack of control.
- Inappropriate behaviors to prevent weight gain (e.g., vomiting, laxatives, fasting, excessive exercise).
- Episodes occur at least once a week for 3 months.
- BMI is usually within or above normal weight range.
- No subtypes.
Binge Eating Disorder (BED)
- BED is characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating without compensatory behaviors.
- Marked distress in regards to binge eating is present.
- Objectively large amount of food in a discrete period with a sense of lack of control (same as BN) but without compensatory behavior.
- No compensatory behaviors are present.
- Episodes occur at least once a week for 3 months.
- People are often overweight or obese, but this is not required for diagnosis.
- No subtypes.
Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder (OSFED)
- Clinically significant eating disturbances that cause distress or impairment but do not meet full criteria for AN, BN, or BED.
- Varies based on presentation (e.g., atypical AN, subthreshold BN/BED, purging disorder, night eating syndrome).
- Presentations may involve body image concerns, depending on the subtype.
- May include subjective binges or atypical patterns.
- May include purging without binging (purging disorder).
- Symptoms cause clinical distress or impairment but don't meet full criteria (e.g., less frequent episodes).
- May include individuals with "atypical AN" who are not underweight.
- Includes: Atypical AN, Subthreshold BN or BED, Purging Disorder, Night Eating Syndrome.
