Chapter 5: Reservation

  • No guarantee of reservation is provided.
  • Passengers need a valid ticket or pass.
  • Advance reservation periods are 120 days (excluding journey day) for general passengers, 365 days (excluding journey day) for foreign tourists.
  • Prescribed reservation forms (COM 744F) must be used.
  • Names of passengers under 5 years old must be in a specific column.
  • Maximum 6 passengers can be booked per form.
  • Medical and senior citizen concessions must be specified.
  • Up-gradation requests must be noted.
  • Reservations are on a "first-come, first-served" basis.
  • Only one form per passenger is accepted at a time.
  • Reservations are not accepted over the phone (except for officials).
  • Reserved tickets are non-transferable.
  • Reservations are for specific dates, trains, and classes.
  • Sleeping accommodations are usable from 22:00 hrs to 06:00 hrs.

Procedure for Reservation from Train Originating Station

Waiting List

  • If all seats are filled, passengers may be placed on a waiting list, and may be re-seated sequentially as available.
  • Wait-listed passengers cannot travel in reserved coaches.
  • A scheme, Vikalp (ATAS) is applied, to ensure use of available seats up on the waiting list.
  • The scheme allows transferring passenger's PNR reservations to other similar trains operating on the same route.
  • Passengers may be given 12, 24 or 48 hours to change options.

Reservation Chart

  • Charts are created 4 hours before departure and updated via notice boards as needed.
  • Supplements to the initial charts showing cancellations and new allocations are presented.

Transfer of Reservation Tickets

  • Ticket selling by unauthorised personnel is punishable by imprisonment and fine.

Group Reservation

  • Written group reservation applications need to be submitted to the station master.

Tatkal Service

  • One-day advance booking is allowed.

  • Tatkal bookings are given for classes with fewer seats in comparison to demands.

  • Ticket includes monogram of Indian Railways, PNR number, ticket number, train number, station names, fare details, class, and number of passengers.

Change of Boarding Point

  • Passengers can change their boarding point up to 24 hours before departure, but there are no refunds.
